Volunteer Hunting for the Fall

With the speedily approaching school year, I started looking around for some volunteering opportunities that I may be able to take interest in during the fall quarter. While browsing through the school website, I came across a page introducing various volunteering openings offered at Ronald Reagan Medical Center. So why not volunteer there?

After all, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center is ranked #1 in California and is famous for being the “best hospital in the west”, according to U.S. News. And the medical center is very conveniently located on campus and it has volunteering opportunities for both students and non-students! So I looked more carefully through the different types of programs they offer, such as the Care Extender Internship, People Animal Connection, and etc., offering positions like patient escort and transport, front door greeter, information desk,…

But the one that especially stood out to me was the relatively new program called Music Therapy. It is part of the Chase Child Life department of the medical center that strives to reach out to children with extended hospitalization needing social and emotional stimulation. With music, I believe, we can calm the spirit and the mind, which can only help fight off the harmful diseases. I believe there is power to heal in music. By volunteering in this particular department of the hospital, I wish to interact one-on-one with patients and connect with each of them through music and the soul.
