Fall "To Do" List

ToDoList

This is an exciting time of year for many people.  Students are going back to school and there are many things on the “To Do” list that must get done.  Some items on the school list: school clothes and supplies shopping, high school graduation pictures, and preparing to complete college applications in the fall.

There are many things involved in applying to college, so we want to share a check list to help you in planning for college applications…to better enjoy the other events in your final year of high school.

September

  • If you have not already done so, you should begin researching universities that you may want to apply to.  Consider all the various factors to help you make the decision:  academic reputation, majors offered, housing options, financial costs student organizations, campus environment, etc.
  • While you are researching and visiting prospective schools, you have fall sporting events to look forward to…football, soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, and more.
  • If you are applying to a University of California campus, you must complete the UC admission test requirements, which can be satisfied by taking either of the following:

The ACT Plus Writing

Or

The SAT Reasoning Test

In addition, all applications must complete TWO SAT Subject Tests in TWO different areas.  Visit the College Board and ACT websites for registration deadlines, test dates, fees, and test site locations.  You have until December to complete these requirements.

October

  • The UC Application is available in early October at www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply.
  • You should begin preparing your personal statement, which is part of most college application and a requirement for the UC Application.  It is best to begin thinking and drafting this in October.
  • Enjoy your schools Fall Homecoming!
  • Remember to continue researching and applying for scholarships.
  • Don’t eat too much Halloween candy!

November

  • Monday, November 30 at 11:59pm is a very important day—deadline to submit your UC Application. We suggest you not procrastinate. If you get it done early, you can enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend!
  • Remember to have different people read your personal statement.  Teachers, counselors, friends, parents, etc. can provide helpful feedback.

December

  • This is the last month to take the ACT plus Writing, SAT Reasoning, and SAT Subject exams.
  • You will receive confirmation that their UC Application was received by the UC System.
  • Enjoy the winter break and holidays since you are half way through the college application process!

January

Look for our Spring “To Do” list in January!
