UARS Top 10 List

I'm not going to lie, I don't really stay up late enough to watch David Letterman anymore, but I'm relatively sure he still does a Top Ten List on his show. Mine isn't going to have any clever jokes or references to Regis Philbin; it's just going to be 10 things it seems like you all want to know, based on your comments. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't. I'm going to thank you all for coming on this journey with me in advance.

10. Reminder to freshman admits: The deadline to submit your SIR is May 1. That's this Thursday.

9. For freshman awaiting appeal decisions: please keep in mind that, historically, the number of students whose original admission decision is overturned based on appeal is incredibly low. If you haven't heard from our office by May 1, I strongly recommend you consider all of your options and SIR to another campus.

8. Transfers awaiting their decisions: they're coming soon! I promise! I know the waiting game is zero fun, but in some cases it's unavoidable. It's almost over...really.

7. Transfers admits: Your deadline to SIR is June 2. That's over a month away, but still a good day to keep in mind.

6. Transfer students who weren't offered admission and want to be considered for their second choice major: unfortunately, UCLA does not do this. Sorry. I know our applicant pool was incredibly strong, and am confident that students who were not offered admission here at UCLA received offers of admission from many other wonderful universities.

5. To the person who asked if the picture of the UARS staff on a recent post is the entire staff: the answer is no. It's not even close. It's just a picture of people who remembered to wear their UCLA shirts on picture day and wanted to achieve internet fame.

4. Freshman and transfer admits who want to report changes to their academic schedule or a decline in performance: please do so via the New Bruins website. Sometimes students avoid notifying us about changes to their academic profile because they are afraid of the results and hope that we just won't notice, but I promise you, we do. If you are concerned that something has changed that could affect your admission status, it is truly in your best interest to notify our office as soon as possible by filling out a Provisional Problem Form.

3. Transfer students considering filing an appeal: for an appeal to have merit, it needs to contain new and compelling information that was not available in your original application. If you are going to claim that you have completed a class that is not on your application, or a grade has been changed, you must supply affirming documentation.

2. On this day in 1788, Maryland was 7th state to ratify the Constitution. Way to go, MD!

1. I know I Pollyanna out on you guys a lot, but I really do appreciate your comments and questions, so please keep them coming and best wishes for a happy university experience this fall, wherever you are!

Okay...now I am begging! I can handle a no, but being left hanging is awful! Are we really going to know by tomorrow or is this process being delayed into next month? How many of us have not gotten a decision? Are the decisions being made based on when the apps where submitted? last name? department? help me out here...please?

I know this is a dumb question, but i will go ahead and ask: Is it absolutely impossible to change your ucla email address? When i first logged onto URSA to create my login id, i did read the warning that it's "lifetime," but did not know that it would aslo be my email address! My login id is a childhood nickname and i made the login "personal," because i thought i would be the only one using it. I discovered that it would also be my email address AFTER creating it, and submitting my SIR....
*Like i said, i understand it might be impossible, but just am curious if there's ANY way to change it. Thanks! :]

Checking the decision site and waiting for my appeals decision is killing me. Although I know that my chances of getting in with an appeal is probably 2%, I still have that hope.

In the event that I don't get in:
What are the chances to transfer into UCLA from a 4 year out of state private school after studying there for 1 year? I know that priority is given to CCs and other UCs so I'm wondering if my attempt at a transfer is even realistic.

I was wondering if the long wait was because I updated my spring schedule recently. I remember on a comment on one of the previous blogs that it was said that results should be in early this week at the latest. Would that still apply if I updated my information recently.

If you haven't received your admission decision from our office yet, you are amongst a very small minority and I'm sorry for the extra wait! Please keep checking back, you will hear from us soon, I promise.

I checked on the website and it said that I was denied admittance into UCLA. When talking to one (well, two) of the people at the Undergraduate Admissions, they said that I didn't meet my math requirement. However, I did take a "College Algebra" and a "Pre-Calculs" course at William R. Harper College in Illinois.

The UCLA representatives said that I needed some kind of documentation stating that the "College Algebra" course I took was an intermediate math course.

I have to wait for the counselors at both Harper college and LACC for their help, but my question is, wouldn't the "Pre-calculus" course I took meet, and exceed, the need for a intermediate math course?

When is the transfer appeal deadline?

Hi. I just wanted to let you know that I think you made a mistake. I posted the question about transferring from a private school, not "Already Goofed"

And I'd just like to say thanks for answering the questions on this blog so quickly- it's all very helpful.

Could you please tell me how small a minority? Any word about when we will know? Is there some problem with my application...would I have been notified? It is officially May, and I can't sleep and I can't concentrate in my classes...am I on a wait list? Is my decision delayed awaiting admitted students intent to register? Please Please Please when will I know?!!!!!!

I need to submit my admissions response to UCLA and I'm not sure how to. I checked on your website and couldn't find anything. Please tell me what to do. I know today is the deadline, so please help me ASAP.
Thank you.

note: I'll be taking late evening classes today and won't get home till 9pm. And my cell phone is out of battery, so I can't call the admissions office.

What happens if you submit the response late?

I'm dying to know when appeal decisions will be out. Is there any way you could provide a more specific time frame? Hopefully I'll find out soon? :(

Thanks

Appeal decisions are released on a rolling basis: a good rule of thumb is about 15 working days, but there are always exceptions, especially if you are appealing to a college other than Letters and Science. I don't want to sound like a broken record, but the chances of your decision being changed on an appeal basis are incredibly slim, and it's a good idea to think about all your educational options when making plans for Fall 2009.

Are we going to receive an email regarding our appeal admissions or do we have to check online everyday?

The deadline for appeals from transfer students is Friday, May 23, 2008.

Please note: It is our usual practice to respond to appeals within three (3) weeks of the date we receive them. However, we cannot guarantee a response by June 1, the date by which many institutions require their applicants to make a commitment. We encourage applicants to consider all of their educational options.

Regarding specific questions such as whether a particular course is transferable, it would be best for you to contact our office. Please call 310.825.3101.

Appeal decisions are officially mailed to applicants. If you are admitted on appeal and you are frequently checking your status online, you will likely see a change to the system before you will receive the official letter in the mail.

When will most undergraduate appeal decisions come out?

If we appeal our process (transfer student), do we get an e-mail saying that UCLA has received our appeal? Or do we just wait for something in the mail? Can I call UCLA to see if they received my appeal? Thanks.

UCLA does not confirm receipt of appeals. You will be notified of a decision on your appeal via an official mailed letter.

We try to make appeal decisions within three weeks of receiving an appeal request. There are exceptions to this process and sometimes it can take longer than three weeks.

As a university admissions counselor and English teacher in Kazakhstan, I just wanted to thank you for this excellent blog. Here, where the university system is centralized and all admissions processes are uniform, students have a hard time understanding that US schools are all different. Often they don't believe me. So the blog is great for me to keep up on UCLA's policies and where you guys are in the process and it also gives me a source I can send students to read it for themselves if they don't want to take my word for it. Thanks again! I wish every school had a blog/site like this.

Will UCLA notify prospective students who filed an appeal regardless of whether they got in or not even after May 1st? And can the decision be accessed online or only by mail?

I am not sure this is the place to ask. From this year's admission, how competitive is UCLA for out of state students? Thanks in advance!

Notify will notify all students who file an appeal, by mail, regardless of whether the appeal is received before or after May 1. The only way that an appeal decision can positively be accessed online is if a student's initial admission decision is overturned. In such instance, if a student is frequently checking their status, they may notice that their admit/deny status has changed prior to receiving the official letter in the mail. Again, UCLA notifies all applicants, those applying and those appealing, officially by US postal mail.

Well, first, UCLA is competitive for freshmen, transfer, in-state, domestic, and international students. It was an incredibly competitive year for all UCLA applicants with over 55,000 applications to consider.

Regarding out-of-state applicants, this year UCLA received 5,724 out-of-state freshmen applications and admitted 1,604 of those applicants. The figures for the transfer applicant pool are not available at this time.
