Q&A Time

Well it's that special time again where I answer the questions you leave in the comments section with a multi-topic post. Some might say this is because I am lazy, but I prefer the term efficient. So in the name of efficiency, let's get down to business, shall we?

Transfer Admissions Decisions: I cannot tell you when decisions will be released. I am sorry. I know this is not the answer anyone wants, but it is the truth. Because our campus receives more applications than any other in the country, it takes us a little longer to read and evaluate all of them. We ask that you bear with us just a little longer; we do promise they'll be released by the end of April.

Appeals/Reconsideration Requests: Some of our freshman applicants who were not offered admission this year have filed appeals and are wondering when they will hear a response. We endeavor to reply to student appeals within 15 working days AKA 3 weeks. One thing to keep in mind if you are waiting for our reconsideration decision is that the deadline to submit your SIR to any UC campus is May 1. Historically, a very small percentage of students have their admissions decisions overturned, so I highly recommend that students awaiting a reconsideration decision consider all educational options available to them for fall 2008.

Admitted Freshmen: Welcome again! We can't wait to meet all our new Bruins this fall. While I love the fact that so many admitted students are coming to this blog with their questions, this isn't always the best place to get the answers you need. I am really only an authority on admissions policies and application procedures. The UCLA homepage has links to the department or office that can give you the answers you need, and it will be your best friend throughout your time here on campus.

So in conclusion, and in summation, bear with us during this busy time and thanks for reading and posting your questions! Keep them coming!

It's already Monday, do you think the transfer admission could be released by tomorrow or within this week since last year it was released on 24th? Thanks!

Pease!!! Give us a hint of when results will be released. I can't stand this agonizing waiting anymore. Could you, at least, tell us if decisions will be realeased this week?

Thank you,

Diego Campos

If I have a low c in a difficult class like calculus, should I still accept my invitation, since there's a chance It'll fall to a D by the end of the year? All my other grades are A's and B's. I've got to decide between my schools soon, and don't want to accept only to get rejected....

I was wondering if history major is impacted at UCLA. It says that applicants exceed spaces available for this major. So I was wondering if that means it is more competitive to get in.

Very interest article.
Regards,

ahhh! how much longer is this going to take? Im hoping to know before Friday so i can drop a class that I'm taking right now that doesn't have much to do with my major if i get in.

I mailed my appeal to UCLA two days after the first decision came out, which is coming up on five weeks ago. However, UCLA did not update their website to say my appeal was received until *coming up on* three weeks ago. I won't ask when appeal decisions will be released, but I was just wondering if you guys are swamped with other requests for reevaluation?

I've been checking my application status on the ucla website for a while now and recently noticed a ucla student I.D number on there...is that I.D number of any use to me right now? do all applicants get one?

We're in late April...and living in limbo. Is there a chance we won't find out until the 30th? This is so nerve-wracking.

Hi Stacy,

I'll be a high school senior this Fall and plan on applying to UCLA. If I have already taken Spanish 1 and 2, is it OK if I take Japanese 1 in my senior year, instead of continuing with Spanish 3? How will the fact that I didn't take 3 years of the same language (Spanish), affect your decision whether to admit me?

Andy

Whoa nelly, you are some curious folks this week.

1. I absolutely, completely, 100% am not allowed to say when decisions will be released. No amount of pleading can change that fact. I totally get that you guys are frustrated, but this is all part of the experience, and it really is almost over. Hang tough, new kids.

Andy: Because we evaluate our applications holistically, there isn't really one aspect of your academic profile that can guarantee that you will or will not be admitted, but you do want to make sure your high school curriculum is meeting the A-G requirements so you maintain UC eligibility. To see what the A-G requirements are, please visit www.admissions.ucla.edu.

I have the same question as Tanya. What happens if I get a D in Calculus, but all my other grades stay A/B? Automatic rejection?

Admissions decisions are up for transfers (at least for me)good luck you guys.

Hello Stacy,
I just received notification that I was admitted to UCLA but I checked ePAL and I didn't see anything about the Regents Scholarship. I applied for the scholarship so does that mean I didn't receive it? Have Regents notifications gone out? Thanks.
Ryan

Did the decision release for you guys? I checked mine, it says still in reviweing...

So I noticed admissions decisions have been released but I think I am in the handful of people that are still checking the website every hour to see if a decision has been made. Is it safe to say the chances of getting in this late in the game are quite low? Is there anyway we could know when the next "wave" of decisions will be posted? thank you.

Ryan: Our office has nothing at all to do with the Regent Scholarship; that's Financial Aid. I would check in with their office to find out your status regarding the Regent's.

Everyone else, pretty much: If you haven't gotten your decision yet, you will soon, I promise! And not getting your decision yet does not mean you won't be admitted, so don't give up hope. Good luck!

Hi, I have a question regarding to the process of appeal. While I was filling out the online application, I knew I was interested in both of the majors (first choice and second choice) that I chose. However, I did not know that UCLA only considers first major for transfers at that time so I basically just chose one of the two majors to be first and the other to be second, as I was thinking that I would be happy to be considered and get accepted into either of the two majors. However, I was not accepted to the first major and just realized that UCLA does not consider second major for transfers. I was wondering if I could still appeal to get into the second major as I am very interested in majoring my second choice. Please kindly let me know. Thank you so much for your information.

Hi my name is Valerie.
I just received a turn-down from UCLA. I would want to know if I can appeal if I am a transfer student. UCLA is my dream school. And I really would want to get in. And I don't know why i didn't because I have a 3.8 GPA. Please kindly let me know what should i do. THanks

Hi my name is Linda and I have been waiting to hear about my appeal decision. I sent my appeal in 5 weeks ago and am still waiting. Is it a positive sign that I haven't been denied on my appeal yet? Do you know how many applicants have accepted a place at UCLA for the fall of 08? How are the appeals given out? Are all appeals sorted so they offer the most desirable appeals first? How many appeals for undergraduate places did UCLA receive this year? How many will they accept?

Hello,

I'm asking this question on behalf of an associate of mine as I already am admitted.

He is a 44 year old adult who has 2 years worth of credits from a college back east and is currently attending UCLA extension.

As far as the formal admittance process is concerned at UCLA, does the UC system allot a certain amount of slots for returning older students? Or are all transfer student batched into the same slots regardless of age or working status?

I'm asking because if there is an "older, working allotment," I was thinking the approval process might not be as competitive.

Thanks in advance, Mark

Mark:
In response to your question, UCLA does not allot a certain amount of slots for "returning older students." However, the transfer selection review has a "personal criteria" in addition to the academic criteria. The following are types of personal circumstances that would be weighed in the review of transfer applicants:

(1) Employment while attending school;
(2) Family responsibility;
(3) Returning to school where early grades are not indicative of strong academic performance:
(4) Ongoing involvement in campus organizations, student government, community service, or clubs;
(5) Circumstances that may have prevented students from achieving their highest overall academic performance; and/or,
(6) Military service.

Applicants should use the personal statement to discuss such information.

Mike & Tanya:
It is difficult for me to speculate on specific hypotehticals. It is most important that you review your Freshman Provisional Contract. It states the following, "Complete your senior year program with the same high standards you have demonstrated thus far. You must complete the senior year classes listed on your application with at least a minimum overall unweighted B average and no grade lower than a C. If your grades drop signifi cantly, you receive any D or F grades, or your class schedule changes, notify our
office immediately."

Debbie:
It can sometimes take more than the usual three weeks to receive, process, re-review, and notify students appealing an admission decision.
