You have questions; I have answers...

Since we released admissions decisions a couple of weeks ago, we have received a LOT of questions on the blog, not surprisingly. I've noticed that questions seem to fall into a few different categories, so I am going to attempt to address them here. I hope you find the information you need.

1) The Decision-Making Process: As much as I would love to convince our admitted students to attend UCLA, I cannot do it in good conscience. UCLA is an amazing place, but it might not be the right school for every body. Take your time, consider your options, and choose the campus where you think you will be the happiest. I promise, you will do better academically if you are happy personally, so follow your instincts.

2) Appeals: I understand that a lot of the students who were not offered admission are very disappointed, and I completely sympathize. However, I do want to reiterate that the chances of having your decision overturned are incredibly slim. For an appeal to have merit, the student has to present new and compelling information that was not presented in the original application. High grades and/or awards earned in the senior year do not qualify as new and compelling information. I strongly advise students who were not offered admission to UCLA to consider attending another four-year institution or a community college.

3) Transfer Admission Decisions: I cannot say when decisions will be released. Our best estimate is mid/late April (just a couple of weeks away!), but I am unable to be more specific than that. Your wait is almost over!

Last but not least, congratulations to our Men's Basketball Team for making it to the Final Four! This has been a very exciting tournament so far, and we wish them the best of luck!

Thanks for the update Stacy!

I checked online for the decision, and I got admitted. However, I haven't received my official acceptance letter or UCLA package. My friends who've been admitted have already received them, and they live in my area. Should I just wait for it to come? What should I do if it doesn't?

Just a FYI here. It looks like Cal has someone from their admissions dept who is answering questions on collegeconfidential.com, a popular forum for college kids looking for info about admissions. Maybe UCLA should consider matching them. (see http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/483248-welcome-new-uc-berkeley-college-rep-myberkeleyapp.html)

that's really a fantastic post ! ! added to my favourite blogs list..

Could you please explain the housing situation? As a freshman is it best to be in a room with 3 people, 2 people, or single? Should I try to get a room in the halls, the suites, or the plazas? Please please help! Thanks so much,
Brooke Rippner

Brooke: You probably want to direct that question to current students (most of whom probably don't read this blog) or UCLA Housing. All I can tell you is there really is no "better" as far as housing goes, there's just what's best for your personality style and budget. The best thing you can do is familiarize yourself with all of your options and be honest with yourself about what you want. Good luck.

Hi, I've sent my appeal letter and school transcript on Thursday. If I want to add a teacher recommendation in my file, can I just ask the teacher to send it to UCLA? What can I do to avoid confusion and make sure it will be added to my file? Thanks.

"Our best estimate is mid/late April (just a couple of weeks away!), but I am unable to be more specific than that."

so decisions could be out by tomorrow?

I sent in my appeal March 22, and heard from UCLA saying that they received it. When should I be expecting a response?

Does any one know If i am a transfer student and my major is sociology, do I have to have all the major preq done in order to get accepted?

I am a transfer applicant and have not yet received an admission decision from UCLA. It is already April 30. Should I be worried?

Today is May 1st when will transfer admissions be posted? Mine still states that it is being reviewed.

Hi. I have 2008-2009 calendar questions for my soon to be freshman at UCLA. As I read next years calendar to book holiday air flights for my student, it appears they are on holiday from Fri Dec 12-Mon Jan 5. If the fall qtr ends Dec 12 and the campus is closed Dec 24, what goes on at the campus during those dates and are students expected to participate in any activities during that time? If the school reopens on Jan 2 and the spring qtr begins on Jan 5, should students be on campus Jan 2,3,4 for anything in particular? Are these "extra" days purely social or are there things that the students will truly need to get done before the next qtr? Thank you for your help on this.

The best thing you can do is familiarize yourself with all of your options and be honest with yourself about what you want. Good luck.

Hi, I've received the letter of admittance from UCLA and now I'm a little unsure about what documents need to be sent to the university as a follow up. Is it just the official transcript and the financial statement from my parents' bank?

I read the comments of someone else in this section, and she is sending a recommendation letter to the university too. So is that compulsory?

Thank you very much for your help!

Please do not send letters of recommendation once you are admitted to UCLA. They are not compulsory or requested.

I like it.

I am a transfer applicant. However, I haven't decided my major, International Development or Economics. If once I major in International Developmenet, is it possible to change my major to economics major? please tell me the answer.

Hi,
I got accepted to Fall/08 but last quarter I got a D for my math 22 class this is not a required class to transfer but I'm wondering is this going to effect on my UCLA admission. Please let me know what should I do?

Thanks

It is very important for admitted students (freshmen and transfer) to report changes to academic status and coursework. If you are a transfer student and you have (1) dropped a course listed on your application; (2) changed a course listed on your application; and/or, received a D or F in a course listed on your application, YOU MUST REPORT it to UCLA Undergraduate Admissions.

Transfer students can report changes on the following website: www.admissions.ucla.edu/ppf_tr/ppf_tr_login.htm.

While I cannot speculate on an individual's circumstances, I will say that a change in academic program or status can result in a student's admission being cancelled. Every student is admitted to UCLA with a provisional admission. Finally, it is important that students take the initiative to notify UCLA Undergraduate Admissions. Please do not assume that if a change is not reported by the student it will go unnoticed by our office.

This blog Is very informative. I am really pleased to post my comment on this blog . It helped me with ocean of knowledge so I really believe you will do much better in the future. Good job web master.

Is it easier to transfer to this school from 2 years at a CC or getting in by test scores?

Franco:
I cannot say that it is easier to be admitted as a transfer applicant from community colleges than it is as a freshman student. Some people might look at the statistics and think it is easier to transfer since a higher percentage of transfer students are admitted to UCLA. However, both application processes are highly competitive.

It is more important to consider what is the best path is for the individual. Some students are more successful at a four-year university after they have attended a community college. others prefer to attend the same university all four years.

Thanks for the update.

I have always dreamed of working with Disney on film and television or any other company. I would really like to get a film and television degree at UCLA. Can anyone tell me some more about it? Or can you tell me how to prepare for it? I'm going into the 10th grade, so what should I do at school to prepare? Is there another school I should pick?
