Welcome to UCLA!

Uars_welcomes_you_2 On behalf of everyone here at Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools, I would like to congratulate our newly admitted students and welcome you to UCLA. As you can see, we're all very excited to meet you! This space is for the Class of 2011 to introduce themselves to their fellow new Bruins.

Wait List...

Some of who applied to our professional schools were placed on a wait list. Please comment here if you were placed on a wait list.

Not Admitted

Freshman admission to UCLA was extremely competitive this year, and we were unable to offer many qualified applicants a space. If you were not admitted, please leave your comments here.

UCLA in the LA Times

Assistant Director Rosa Pimentel, Director Vu Tran, and Recruiter Annie Huerta are featured in an LA Times article today on the holistic admissions process.

Decisions this week...UCLA in the Final Four...I don't think there has been a more exciting time here at UARS. I look back at my blog post on our quiet office with such fondness...

UCLA Soup

7795aUCLA's got miles upon miles of corridors with all kinds of labs branching off of them, and I got to see a few of them when I was a psych student here. (I was mostly working on with people in rooms rather than pipettes in labs). Students in other disciplines get more lab time and often work closely with professors on projects. As I wander the corridors of the Med Center or the Center for Health Sciences (usually looking for shortcuts through campus -- UCLA is all about finding building hacks), I sometimes wonder what the researchers are cooking up in those labs. Right now, it's apparently UCLA Soup. Here's a snippet from the news release:

UCLA professor Thomas G. Mason and chemistry graduate student Carlos J. Hernandez produced microscale particles shaped like each letter of the alphabet. Graduate student James Wilking used "laser tweezers" to pick up the letters 'U, C, L, A' and move them in order "like skywriting in solution."

You can read the full news release here. For information about Mason's research, visit www.chem.ucla.edu/dept/Faculty/Mason. Science!

And thanks for all the questions and comments you've been leaving!

The Rumor Mill

A number of you have been asking us--either on the phone, via email, in person, or on this blog--about when we will release our admission and deny decisions. We've written about it a few times here, but it's worth reiterating because it's so important to us and to you. So here goes: UCLA Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools will release its freshman admission decisions for fall 2007--online and via traditional mail--at the very end of the last week of March 2007. UCLA UARS will release its transfer admission decisions for fall 2007--online and via traditional mail--at the end of the fourth week of April 2007. The only official UCLA admission or deny decision you will receive will come directly from UCLA Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools in the mail and on our website.

There's really no way we could release the decisions earlier than the dates I listed--believe me, I would know. I'm coordinating all of the printed material for our notification via traditional mail, and nary a letter, packet, postcard, or scrap of paper has been dropped in the mail with any UCLA admission or deny decision on it. I realize, as do my colleagues, that this is a really exciting time for all of you, and, for many of you, it's anxiety provoking. If you have any other questions about UCLA admissions or campus life, please feel free to comment on this blog. I'm certain that many of you have the same questions for us, so go public with your queries.

March Madness

Face_paint_2 Hey everybody, guess what begins tomorrow? As ESPN commentator Dick Vitale would say, "It’s March Madness, baby!" My name is Carmen Chang, and I work as an Admissions Assistant at UCLA Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools. I just graduated from UCLA last year, and have been an ardent basketball fan since my time here as a student.

Since last November, Coach Ben Howland and his dedicated basketball team have played hard to enter the NCAA Tournament. As a result, we have been selected as the #2 seed (team) in the Western region. Whether you are a current UCLA student, a recent UCLA graduate like me, a prospective applicant, or a fan who has dressed in the blue and gold since the age of 7, this is an amazing time for everyone to get together and cheer on our beloved Bruins. Last year, we made it to the Final Four (beating Gonzaga!) and advanced to the Championship round. This year, we have been given the opportunity again to repeat and hopefully win it all. This is certainly history in the making.

If you have ever attended a UCLA game, you know how passionate we fans are about continuing our basketball legacy. I remember camping out in front of Pauley Pavilion the night before the game to receive "priority passes" to get good seats in the student section. I remember doing so many 8-claps and yelling at the opposing teams that I would lose my voice. Trust me, all those nights sleeping on hard pavement and getting laryngitis were well worth it. All for UCLA entering the Big Dance. So it's finally here, guys...make sure you free up your busy schedule for some Bruin basketball!

The Road to Atlanta for #2 UCLA begins tomorrow (March 15) against #15 Weber State in Sacramento, CA. Coverage begins at 4:25pm, PST (CBS, Channel 2 in Los Angeles).

A Student Group in Action

You've probably heard by now that UCLA has over 800 student groups on campus. But it's hard to understand what that really means for campus life, even when you scroll through the club names on the student groups Web site. That may even seem sort of overwhelming. Rather than looking at all of the choices at UCLA--5000+ classes, 130 majors, tens of thousands of students, faculty and staff, etc.--and feeling at a loss, you should look at these and see all of the myriad ways that you can customize your UCLA experience.

An example: Yesterday, I was strolling down Bruin Walk, as I do, on my way to the Wooden Center for a post-workday workout. As I walked towards Kerckhoff Hall, I saw a long line of students stretching out from the Kerckhoff Patio towards Janss Steps. I asked a young Bruin in the line what they were waiting for, and he replied, "John Edwards." Nifty! A former VP-candidate and '08 democratic presidential hopeful speaking on campus. Further down Bruin Walk, I saw a flier for the John Edwards event, which stated that his speech was organized by the Bruin Democrats. Ah-ha. A student group in action.

I did my workout, grabbed a Jamba Juice in Ackerman, and took the lazy way up to Lot 2 (where most of us Murphy Hall-types park) through Kerckhoff Hall. And as I made my way out of the building, immediately to my right on Kerckhoff Patio was Mr. Edwards himself, orating on universal healthcare and saving the environment to a forest of news cameras and a throng of enthralled Bruins. I listened for a little while, and I surreptitiously called Stacy to tell her about the speech because she's a newsie. (She interned at NPR through the UCDC program while she was at UCSB).

So, the moral of the story: No matter what political party you belong to, there's a club for you at UCLA--and there's sure to be some amazing events on campus and in the community.
