Just the Beginning

This upcoming week is my last week at UCLA…it is so eerie just to type that out. Just three years ago, I was just about to graduate high school and discover college land. I was so scared. Three years later, I am in the same position. I am about to graduate college and moving on to a big boy job- become a teacher. I am set to work for Teach for America as a corps member and teacher in California. I am excited and scared at the same time.

I want to take this LAST post as an opportunity to express my thanks to all the readers and every one who has had an impact in my life while at UCLA. Because of all of you, I am a better person today. As I graduate, I want to move on, create even better memories, and live happily. I know that sounds so broad but I am in the move to do just that.

For those of us graduating, I am so proud of us!!! Really, I am! Couldn’t be more excited for the next phase of our lives! Those whom I have met while attending UCLA have been a true blessing in my life. I am the Manny I am today because of all of you guys. Attending UCLA made my life a happier one. I run my life through the word “fabulous.” Anytime anyone makes a reference using fabulous and my name is just precious. I take it to heart. Fabulous to me is so empowering and endearing in everything I do, and in return, what I hope people see out of me.

This year has brought a lot of changes, both good and bad, in my life and a lot of my friend’s lives. But I am so proud to say we are all still here, fighting our causes and ending our school year on a high note. Our faith has brought us together and made us so much stronger. It brings me so much happiness to know that despite everything that has happened in our lives we are still standing and not letting our circumstances get the best of us.

I try to live every day to its fullest, without regrets. My goal is to be a happy person and make myself and others around me smile. How do I do that you may ask? Or how do I imagine I am capable of that? Well, its quite simple. Life is hard in itself easily. But it is goal of mine to overcome those obstacles and be a winner out of everything and anything I do. That is why, my ultimate goal is to laugh and make others laugh, which bring smiles from both sides :^D. Why should we let our downfalls get the best out of who we are today? It should be our goal to be happy and live life to the fullest EVERY DAY. As we graduate, it is important that we take that with ourselves in our lives after UCLA. We all go through different things in different times. It is what we make out of our unforeseen circumstances that make us who we are. Our hardest battles make us so much stronger than does that do not challenge us to think or act.

Therefore, we should make the best out of every challenge we may find. Smile on, I dare you. Try it at least once, I ask of you. Some say smiles are contagious. Well, I also say they are addictive. Do it once, and you’ll do it again and again. Psh, it’s hard to be fabulous! But what is life without a challenge? What is life without a little bit of a struggle? Once the dust settles, comes sunshine, :) . You’ll see, trust me. There is a beginning to every end. That is the absolute beauty of it! It is up to US to bring about that marvelous change and beginning out of every opportunity we get. I leave you guys on this note in my last blog post.

Life is beautiful, do not ever forget that. It is filled with beautiful and marvelous people who make it that much more fabulous. Lets be grateful for what we have and not for what we do not have. Lets think positive and make possibilities happen. With this, I leave you all! Actually, I let you begin your new opportunity to smile…:)

Until next time, be fabulous! xoxo

Manny :)

My friend Ruth

Throughout the past two years, I have been able to know one of the most influential and fabulous people ever. She started out as my supervisor/boss but is now my full fledged friend. Her name is Ruth. She does an amazing job at supervising the Bruin Ambassador Program; the program wouldn’t be where it is today because of her. Just imagine managing a group of STUDENTS acting as recruitment resources for the most applied to school in the nation! How amazing is that?!?! Every day, I am completely amazed at how down to earth and amazing she is.

I decided to dedicate this blog to her because she is just simply inspiring. She has helped me learn and grow so much as a person. She has provided me with one of the most amazing opportunities I could have ever been involved in- be a coordinator for the Bruin Ambassador Program. I “owe” a lot to her. As a supervisor for BAP, she has done so much for all of us. She has showed us all that she really care for the success of the program but most of all for us the students who bust our butts every day to get those resources out there! She has shown me that she is more to me than just a supervisor. She is someone who I can turn to for advice and guidance. This year has been one of the hardest years personally and yet she has made it so amazing.

It scares me to think that most likely, for sure, most definitely I will never have a supervisor as amazing as Ruth. But I look forward to the many, many more memories I will make with her! She is just simply flawless and of course, FABULOUS!

Celebrating my Brother’s Graduation

This past week, I celebrated my younger brother’s graduation from Santa Ana College. He earned his AA Degree while also getting his high school diploma. I am so immensely proud of him!!!! It reminded me of how fast time flies. I still remember like it was yesterday when I used to walk my brother to his class during Elementary school. I also remember waiting with him in line before school started. I believe that these experiences we shared during Elementary brought us even closer as siblings. I always think back about how I was sort of a ‘guardian’ for my brother throughout his schooling years. Even now, I still act as a third parent, which in some cases might annoy my brother. But, as long as I look out for him and create the opportunities that weren’t necessarily available to me while growing up then I am all for it. I love my brother so much, for many, many reasons. He has such a big heart, soul, mind, and is such a genuinely nice person. I am so proud of everything he has accomplished in life. I also cannot wait what he does in the future. Only good things are going to come out of the next few years, I just know it. As for me, this reminds me of my upcoming graduation. It is showtime for me in a couple of weeks…until then, I am off to enjoy this beautiful sunny day in LA!

Test Taking Continues

Yesterday, I took the CSET Multiple Subjects test: it includes of three subtests spanning over English subjects, History, Science, Math, Physical Development, Human Development and Visual and Performing Arts. It was one of the hardest tests I’ve ever taken. Though it doesn’t go all the way up to the hardest parts of every subject it does require you to think critically for every question. Granted, I’m finished with it now after being in the test taking room for 5 (yes, five) straight hours. Now, I await until I receive my test scores. Please pray for me y’all!

As I await my scores, I will enjoy my time off not thinking about the test. Now it’s all about enjoying my last weeks here at UCLA. It’s the start of Week 7 and I’m so excited for what awaits me. I’m truly blessed to go to such a beautiful university.

Week 5- Halfway done with Undergrad!

This week brings Week 5! That means that I am halfway done with my Undergraduate  years as a student at UCLA. This is definitely ringing a bell that midterms are coming, papers are coming, graduation event-planning is coming, and graduation itself is upon us. It seems like Spring Quarter is flying by! Next thing you know, I will be writing that finals are here…so not fab! As these last few weeks at UCLA approach me, I want to remember one thing: all the precious memories that I have made here and all the one I will make as my journey as a student comes to an end. As many of you may know, I am going to be working with Teach for America as a Special Education teacher. I couldn’t be any more proud and excited than ever before. It’s like being accepted into UCLA all over again. I am up for the challenge and rewards that I am sure TFA will bring me. I have five other friends who I can call fellow Corps members who will be joining me in this new journey of my life as well.

As I continue throughout the next week finishing up my coursework as a student, I begin preparing for my work of the future. What a blessing! I couldn’t be any more excited and thrilled- BRING IT FUTURE!

Meeting Josh Hutcherson

This past week, along with my roommate, I got to meet Peeta from Hunger Games- Josh Hutcherson. Josh was here on behalf of Ally Week representing the anti-bullying campaign Straight But Not Narrow. It was wonderful being able to meet such an inspirational and rising young artist such as Josh. I was so star struck! Josh was also recognized on behalf of GLAAD for being an advocate in increasing visibility and understanding of the gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender community. He even won the Vanguard Award.

As a student attending UCLA, it made me so proud that Josh was here at our school participating in our week long events of Ally Week. It is great to see that he is using his star power to raise awareness for such a beautiful cause. Sometimes we get so consumed in our own lives and forget to help out others in the midst of everything. In between all of his work and everything else, Josh Hutcherson has proved to be someone who is not only talented, but also dedicated and caring. Now that is what makes a person inside and out just plain beautiful.

United on Bruin Day

This past Saturday UCLA held Bruin Day to welcome and introduce our campus to incoming Bruins that will officially start school this Fall. I worked the event on behalf of Bruin Ambassadors and I cannot say how excited and thrilled I was to welcome some of our new Bruins home. UCLA has had such a positive and marvelous impact in my life and I couldn’t be happier to share my experiences with all the new Bruins. My pride in UCLA stands in the fact of how diverse it is. I am so proud to call myself a Bruin and attend one of the very best institutions in the United States. Call me biased but I seriously believe UCLA is one of the very best all-around institutions in the world. I’ve met some of the most amazing individuals ever on this campus. Everyday that I step into campus provides me with the opportunity to learn something new and become a more knowledgeable person. To call myself a senior on Bruin Day gave me chills with just how fast time has flown. During the next 8 weeks I will fully embrace my time here as a Bruin. After all, our Undergraduate years are known as the Best Years of Our Lives!!!!!!!!

A Look into a Public Policy Research Seminar

For this quarter, I am taking a Public Policy Research Seminar that fulfills my Capstone requirement for the Public Affairs minor I am completing. I couldn’t be any more excited to learn about different proposed bills currently in the Judicial system. In this class, we will dive into the process of simulating the role of a policy staff aide to an elected official. Since class is only once a week,  we will complete 10 different assignments that have to do with the process in developing a policy proposal which could become legislation. For the first week, we need to find a topic and write a description of the proposed policy. Then we need to complete an internal briefing memo which goes into the background of the proposed policy, cost/benefit analysis, political risk assessment and includes a question and answer section. In addition, we will create a press release announcing the proposal to our class, look into responding to angry constituents regarding the proposal, write an opinion piece (“Op Ed” piece), write a draft of a five minute speech to a civic organization, and then for the final assignment, act as if you are testifying before a “legislative committee.”

Though it seems like this class will require a lot of research and work, I am really looking forward to it. This is why I decided to become a Public Affairs minor– to be able to look at how policies affect the general public and what benefits/costs they have towards the target audience it is affecting. I am definitely excited and cannot wait to learn about the different proposed policies that are currently floating around that can potentially have a big impact in our society. I have decided to write my proposed policy topic on Dianne Feinstein’s Respect for Marriage Act. We will see how everything works out…wish me luck!!!

The Start of Spring Quarter

Every time I start a new quarter it amazes me how fast time flies. Seriously, the quarter system is no joke. 10 weeks from now I will be wondering where the quarter went. To prepare efficiently for a quarter you have to manage your time effectively every day. Not a single day goes by during a quarter where I do not think about homework or what I have to do next to prepare for my class. That is what keeps me on task and on top of all my deadlines in regards to my classes. I would not trade the quarter system for the semester system. because I feel like I work better in a fast paced environment. I  love it. I love to be busy so that is one thing that keeps me going as well. If I am not doing something, then something is wrong, :P . For me, I have to be on top of every single thing I do- whether it has to do with academics or not. That is why the quarter system is for me– I’m either doing something school related or doing something to keep me sane and happy. This Spring Quarter will be my last Spring Quarter ever as an undergrad. I don’t know whether to feel excited or not about starting my last quarter at UCLA. These will be my last ten weeks. It is a serious countdown that I will be taking advantage every single day of. Here’s to a fabulous quarter!!!

Remedy for the End of Finals- Mother’s Cooking

Now that finals are finally over we can all finally start to enjoy the beginning of our Spring Break. I have always said that Spring Break is such a tease– it really is. We get one week off and then it’s time to hit the books again. This Spring Break I hope to really spend a lot of quality time with my family and friends. I am going to be leaving this upcoming June and I want to make the most out of my time be quality time with my loved ones. I also plan to enjoy a lot of the home cooked meals– YUMMY! One of my favorite things about coming back home when I visit is my mom’s cooking. My mom is seriously the best when it comes to spoiling me with food- MEXICAN FOOD THAT IS. One of my favorite dishes of hers is Potato Soup (what we call Caldo de Papa). It is especially delicious during this cold weather. The ingredients that she adds is onion (not a lot), tomato, green peppers, cheese (whatever cheese you enjoy- though my favorite is Mozzarella) and of course potatoes. Even though it sounds pretty basic, he deliciousness that is found in this yummy plate is unbelievable. Not only is it healthy but it has an amazingly good taste. Soft spot to my heart? My mom’s cooking.
